Kharnak Valley is a high mountain plateau on the Tibetan plate. Nomadic residents who moves to higher pastures in summers inhabit this place. The trek will take you through the stark mountain ranges of the Himalayas towards the wider expanse of Changthang plateau. The trek offers spectacular views of the Ladakh and Zanskar Ranges while crossing some of the beautiful mountain passes. You will reach an altitude of 4600m on the second day and will not descent below 4000m until the end of the trek! You will come across nomadic camps where Changpas tend to their Yaks, sheep and goats.

    Day

    (2 hours, 45km) Leh (3500m) to Shang Sumdo (3700m)
    • After spending couple of your days doing sightseeing and acclimatizing at Leh, you will be driving towards Shang Sumdo the next morning. As you cross the bridge over the Indus River, the road starts ascending in elevation. Shang Sumdo is a village surrounded by mountain valleys and several households. It is the trekking point where camping overnight near the village will make you quite familiar with the impending trek and you will find ample time to acclimatize yourself before heading further on the trail.

    Day

    (4 hours, 6km) Shang Sumdo to Chu Skyurmo (4070m)
    • Next day, you will begin the trek by walking up the valley along a beautiful gorge. After 2 hours on the trail you will come across the settlement of Chokdo with few households. Further 2 hours ascending the trail, you will be arriving at a camping site called Chu Skurmo. You will be camping here as today is the first day of the trek and have to suffice yourself with a very limited walk. The highlight of this site is its water which is reputed to have medicinal qualities.

    Day

    (5-6 hours) Chu Skyurmo to Nimaling (4720m) via Gongmaru La pass (5150m)
    • This stage challenges you to quite an extent. It is, therefore, suitable to start early as you will be ascending the main trail to Gongmaru La pass. From Chu Skyurmo the valley narrows and the trail ascends the steep slopes on both the sides of the stream. You might spot the Himalayan Blue Sheep (Ladakhi: Napo), one of the several species of wild goats living in the mountains of Ladakh. On reaching the Gongmaru La, your efforts will be compensated by fabulous views and you will be delighted to conquer the first pass!

    (5-6 hours) Nimaling to Zalung Karpo Base (4600m)
    • A relatively easy stage but an early start is recommended since the trail has several river crossings. You will be passing through the Hankar Valley and the trail leads further up till Zalung Karpo North Base.

    Day

    (6 hours) Zalung Karpo North Base to Kharnak Sumdo (4300) via Zalung Karpo Pass (5197m)
    • The trail ascends to Zalung Karpo Pass (5150m). Ascending steeply where the slope lessens following the main valley, you will reach the pass. On reaching you will be greeted by prayer flags and one of the best views in Ladakh, including the peaks of Kang Yaze and the rugged Zanskar Range. After savouring in the view, you will be descending till the junction where a diversion point makes another route to Zanskar via Junglam. Camp overnight at Kharnak Sumdo.

    Day

    (7-8 hours) Kharnak Sumdo to Dat (4323m)
    • An easy stage walking on a relatively flat, open and beautiful ground by the stream and some lush green meadows, you will reach the village of Dat. On the way look out for rare sightings of golden eagle and blue sheep. An old fort and a monastery greets on your arrival. You could visit the monastery and then camp overnight.

    Day

    (5-6 hours) Dat to Lungmoche (4743m) via Yarla pass (4954m)
    • At this stage you will be walking long hours over the open valley and the plains of Changthang. The landscape is also going to change from this stage onwards as you will be walking over the Yarla Pass and the Tibetan Plateau. The views from the Yar La pass is worth the experience. From the pass you will be descending to the pastures of Lungmoche.

    Day

    (6 hours) Lungmoche to Zara (4310m)
    • The last stage is a flat and easy trail along the flowing stream towards the nomadic settlements at Yagang and Zara. The trek ends here and your pick up vehicle would be waiting for you to drop back to Leh.

Important Things You must know before the starts of the Trek

  • You must be well acclimatized before the start of the trek. As starting trek, without taking precaution leads to untoward incident.
  • You must bring warm clothes, good trekking shoes, Slipper for river crossing, Walking stick.
  • Sun cream is very important to protect your skin.
  • Sun glasses
  • Water bottle and water filter.

How is a usual day of Trekking?

Early in the morning you are serve bed tea in the tent with morning wishes. After bed tea, you start packing up your things. Breakfast is served in the dining tent. After breakfast, you are ready for the day. Guide walks with you but before living make sure your bag contains all the important things you need during the day like Camera, sun cream, water bottle, lunch box etc. You carry a light backpack containing all these important things required during the day and the other things come of the horse back. At noon, you stop for lunch at a nice location, and have some rest. Trek continues, and the horseman and kitchen staff leads you on the way. Before your arrival at the camp, our team would be ready tent and tea, juice and light snacks to refresh your tiredness. After the arrival at campsite, you can enjoy your leisure in your own way. The dinner is served around 7 in the evening. Post dinner, our guide brief you about the next day and decides the timing for next day with your insights and suggestions.

The food menu in breakfast, lunch and dinner keep switching from Indian, Tibetan, Chinese, Ladakhi, Continental, and Italian.
